9/14 a.m.: rain and discouragement: not sure of your desire to hear any more 'field reports' from ground zero. i will be going back later today, to the armory where the family compassion center is, though i'd rather be at ground zero with the rescue workers; today may be the worst.. actually, there may well be little more from me. discouragement is the key word now here. yesterday, there was a lot of excitement over rumors flying around the scene that 5 firefighters had been rescued from the rubble, not just because of them, which was great, but because it implied that others may have survived. but later we learned that the rumors were mistaken. two firefighters involved in the later rescue fell into a hole yesterday and were pulled out. good news, but not quite the sign we were hoping for. then we were hit with very intense rains last nite, that will continue on and off this morning. not only did that hamper rescue efforts, of course, but this morning the word is that whatever pockets there were (where survivors might be trapped but alive with air) may well be flooded. additionally, 5 or 6 different subway lines all ran below the WTC; they flooded badly and reports this morning are that the roofs have collapsed, bringing rubble and perhaps bodies, with them. then 7 arabs were arrested at kennedy and laguardia. in one incident, three men aroused suspicions on board an united airlines flight and produced pilots licenses that proved bogus. reports are that two men were discovered to have had tickets on one of tuesday's flights that slammed into the wtc, but were turned away at the airport in boston for suspicious behavior. looks like another hijacking (or three) might have been about to take place yesterday. it's not over. between the rain, the time passed, and the extent of the devastation, hope is thin now. i personally am pollyanna and often amazed at the strength of the human spirit, so i am staying hopeful. the rescue workers do NOT seem like they are flagging in their efforts, although hampered by the awful weather. it is critical that family members know that everything is being done that can be. but all the news is so discouraging. |
